why does an aircraft's centre of pressure move forward when it goes from transonic to supersonic flight?
01-05-2017 01:42:53
alan
hi buddy
i need help to solve a question
it is about meteorological radar
who can help me?
tisdell
passenger moving, nose landing gear, fuel burning
it coul move the cg of an acft
01-05-2017 03:07:40
Miheret
hi guys!!! is right to take single engine taxi as event?
01-05-2017 03:09:39
alan
normally ATR aircraft yes
01-05-2017 03:14:30
Miheret
what the effect of that?
01-05-2017 03:21:40
alan
just to save fuel
normally the companies do it to sava money of fuel burning, there is not effect to the engines
it because is one day for cut off one engine, and other day for the other engine. So there is no negative consequence fot it.
did u understand?
01-05-2017 03:30:29
Miheret
yes, little bit, i have another question what about high speed on approach 90s to touch down,?
01-05-2017 03:31:10
alan
what is 90s?
01-05-2017 03:33:04
Miheret
90 second
01-05-2017 03:33:51
alan
I think it depends os the acft class
if it is a small plane is easy to reduce speed.
but on a jet plane is it impossible because you need to be on a touchdown zone at Vref
if you are faster than expected you will increase the ASDA
and LDR will be longer.
Did you undertand?
01-05-2017 03:40:44
Miheret
yes. it is jet engine but how to measure the speed by indicated airspeed with out landing flap setting and 90 sceonds before touch down ? is right to set this event ?
01-05-2017 03:41:45
alan
OK
Are you talking about clean configuration?
with out flap setting?
so
What you need to know is that you must be 23% above the speed stol when you are approaching
if you stol speed is about 100kt, you must be 123kt
it will be the lowest speed to mantain with out flap setting
01-05-2017 03:53:46
Miheret
OK. what about highest speed with out landing flap setting .
01-05-2017 03:54:24
alan
for approach?
01-05-2017 03:55:56
Miheret
yes?
01-05-2017 03:57:34
alan
So, in my opnion there isn´t
it is up to you
it is up your feeling
the minimum speed there is but the highest i believe there isnt
01-05-2017 04:01:12
Miheret
thank you , that why i am confused, when work detail analysis with out flap setting it come high speed on approach event
OK, one more what about GPWS warning that possible come with out other warning?
01-05-2017 04:07:43
alan
What are you planning to do?
high speed
with out GPWS
01-05-2017 04:09:12
Miheret
GPWS warning is another question ?
not related with high speed
01-05-2017 04:09:39
alan
I know
i´m saying about the contest
context
01-05-2017 04:11:28
Miheret
i want to known is is tha possible to come gpws warning with out other warning like pull up...during detail analysis?
01-05-2017 04:11:58
alan
so man
i dont about that
sorry.
01-05-2017 04:12:14

no problem, i just to known it.
ok. i will

QIn order to produce an alternating voltage of 400 Hz, the number of poles required in an AC generator running at 6000 rpm is:
?
my ansr is coming out to be 8 but anser given in JAR is 4
01-09-2017 10:44:39
InsturmentationQ
Has anyone sat instruments at the CAA recently?
01-09-2017 02:18:35
Khwaja Haroon
@gabbar. They should have asked for pole pairs (4) instead of poles (8). Calculations on this page: http://www.theairlinepilots.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=505
Not your fault
nu you'll be needing the whiz wheel for TAS

Hi, can anyone explain the difference between autopilot control inner loop and outer loop?
in details if possible
01-13-2017 07:50:03
dave
sure
inner loop is only Stabilization of the aircraft.
outer loop is the guidance function
stabilization like wings level or pitch. guidance like ALT HLD or HDG HLD
01-13-2017 07:51:01
hong
do you mean inner loop = stability augmention?
or autopilot and stability augmentation is a different thing?
01-13-2017 07:52:40
dave
the autopilot is also a tool for the stabilization of the aircraft
so stabilization is one part of the AP
01-13-2017 07:53:24
hong
So Stability augmentation systems is included in autopilot system?
01-13-2017 07:53:52
dave
yes :)
thats the inner loop
01-13-2017 07:54:02
hong
which relate to yaw/pitch damper?
01-13-2017 07:54:12
dave
yaw damper is stabilization
same as pitch and wings leveler (roll)
01-13-2017 07:54:53
hong
i see.
but inner loop can only stabilize the aircraft
01-13-2017 07:55:09
dave
:)
yes i think so! for the rest you have the outer loop
01-13-2017 07:55:36
hong
how does it maintain a particular heading without outer loop?
cause outer loop provide external input.
cause i read from a notes that is say that inner loop does not have the capability to main a particular eading or course
maintain*
sorry for the long question
01-13-2017 07:58:35
dave
hm
if it has an outer loop it can maintain heading...Im not sure what you mean that it misses the outer loop?
in the first part of ur question you are mixing it up :)
maybe lol
01-13-2017 07:59:55
hong
erm
ok wait i misread your chat
lol
stabilization like wings level or pitch. guidance like ALT HLD or HDG HLD
so inner loop can only stabilize aircraft like a yaw damper
and outer loop is like using the external source to guide the aircraft automatically to desired course?
01-13-2017 08:07:10
dave
yes
01-13-2017 08:07:46
hong
i see
thank you
so both works in a control loop with feedback
01-13-2017 08:11:36
dave
yes but watch out bc for example the yap damper feedbeck is only on the little gauge
01-13-2017 08:12:05
hong
what do you mean on a little gauge?
01-13-2017 08:12:08
dave
there is no actual movement of the pedals but there is for the roll on the yoke (in a boeing at least)
https://goo.gl/images/zX0dQF
pic of a yaw damper gauge
01-13-2017 08:13:54
hong
hmm
do you mean that only roll and pitch will have movement on the pedals?
and yaw does not?
01-13-2017 08:18:19
dave
not on the pedals but the other controls yes
01-13-2017 08:18:36
hong
i see
cause i am currently writing a report mainly focusing on the autopilot system inner & outer loop control
01-13-2017 08:19:27
dave
good luck with that
01-13-2017 08:19:45
hong
thanks
am i on the right track if i focus inner loop on stability augmentation system
and outerloop on holding pitch mode, heading mode, landing mode etc
like how the control loop works like a PID control
01-13-2017 08:25:04
dave
yes that should be good
check it with some other page as well
01-13-2017 08:26:19

does somebody know what AIMS stands for
it has to do something with the overheat detection system
i hope somebody knows what it means because i can't find it online
y
01-15-2017 02:19:19
Khwaja Haroon
@ Robbert: In some aircraft, in addition to fire and overheat detection, the Kidde continuous-loop system can supply nacelle temperature data to the airplane condition monitoring function of the aircraft in-flight monitoring system (AIMS). Check this link for the details on fire protection system.

Hi

concerning AIMS
TOGW Takeoff Gross Weight
Gust loads are loads caused by gusts. So the contributring factor to the load factor caused by gusts.
V1 is equal or smaller than Vr
So the question is not relevant

i got a confusion. the question said that the aircraft flies at its mimimum drag and assume to be at constant altitude
as the aircraft flies, its weight decreases as fuel is burnt
bcos of that, airspeed is also decreases right?
how can an aircraft flies at constant altitude, when its speed is decrease?
do i have to change the angle of attack?
can i change the angle of attack but still keeping the minimum drag condition

02-26-2017 08:17:54
Niku
NG Wei Hong the answer is B
RAZERZ the DME measures slant distance and is considered aproximatelly acurate when the distance from the DME is at least 3 x your height but if DME is showing 16 than your distnace is 16nm
02-27-2017 02:07:32

ICAO recommends accuracy of less than the sum of 0.25 nmi plus 1.25% of the distance measured.

I had a doubt regarding QDM AND QDR
QDM is stated as track from the aircraft to the station but QDR is "bearing" from the station
whyyy?
I mean the difference between the track and the bearing

Rime ice forms when liquid water droplets in the air freeze onto a surface, growing into combs, needles, or feathery forms. In the two photographs above, the rime grew over the course of many hours, as a freezing fog lingered for most of a night and all of the following morning.

@mustafa6tyui Slant range is 17000 ft and altitude is 8000ft, Draw a right traingle and we get height of triangle as 8000ft and hypotenuse as 17000 ft , We need to find the Base of the triangle or the horizontal distance from station. sin(angle) = opp side/ hypotenuse ie, sin(angle)= 8000/17000= 0.47 so the angle = sin inverse(0.47)= 28 degrees. We know that cos(angle)= adjacent side/hypotenuse so adjacent side = cos(angle) x Hypotenuse= cos(28) x 17000 = 15000 ft or approx 2.5 NM

Hi guys , i did my VFR coms exam yesterday . it was a question that i ve not ever seen but i think its logical but i want to make sure. If the transponder is working properly on Mode C , which parameter can you omit when calling the ATC? "The time" , "the Altitude or Level" , "The position" --- and another one that i forgot now , but it was not the correct one for sure :-)
i put the altitude because of Mode C is working. You are supposed to be transmitting your flight level with that Mode , right?
thanks guys

Hi ! I need help with this question
An air driven DGI is corrected for apparent wander at 56\xb0N. If the aircraft is maintaining constant DGI readings,A. When flying N from 56\xb0N the true heading of the aircraft will decreaseB. when flying east from 56\xb0N the true heading Will decreaseC. When flying south from 56\xb0N the true heading will decreaseD. When flying west from 56N True heading will increase
In my book the answer ( according to the correction ) is C and i don't understand why ><
I would say A Because normally it seems that flight North from the 'corrected latitude' gives an increasing reading no ?
Thanks in advance
i've found by myself sorry ^^ I confused The DGI reading & True Heading so i unde
*rstand now why the answer is C

Can anyone explain why the centre of pressure moves forward briefly in transonic flow before moving rearward as the aircraft accelerates?
06-21-2017 06:47:25

hello all
@Sam : My guess is, as the aircraft acclerated from transonic to supersonic, the high pressure created behind the shockwaves are responsible for the centre of pressure to move rearward.

Goodmorning! question guys. A synchroscope indicates qualitative/quantitative.. RPM or Hz?
2nd question: An A/C with 5 deg flaps has a much higher CLLTOM than FLLTOM. What can you do to increase FLLTOM?Incr/decr flap setting or incr/decr V2?
06-27-2017 07:01:06
Khwaja Haroon
Less flaps means better climb gradient after getting airborne due to less drag so there is an increase in Climb Limit Weight. However less flaps increases the ground roll due to less lift, so there is a decrease in the Field Length Limit Weight. If CLTOM is higher than FLLTOM then I think increase flap setting seems to be the answer. Increasing V2 will improve CLTOM at the cost of eating up the field length.

How about the first Q A synchroscope indicates qualitative/quantitative.. RPM or Hz?
I know that you can set engines to same speed... but is it a qualitative or quantitative reading of RPM or Hz?
06-27-2017 08:56:38
A D M I N
Welcome.
Quantitative Display: In which quantity (being measured) is presented in terms of a numerical value by the position of a pointer etc. Qualitative Display: In which info is presented in symbolic or pictorial form. Synchroscope is used in conjuction with rpm indicating system to show state of synchronization between two rotating things (e.g. rotating to show speed difference between two engines) by symbolizing the propellers so its "Qualitative".

With inoperative anti skid Weight and V1 is reduced because you need more room for stopping. Think about the stopping scenario in case of abort with anti skid inop.

Thanks Khwaja. Is the diagram saying the Total pitching moment is a constant value and a reduction in several moments e.g. Thrust,Wing lift and tail lift will cause a corresponding increase in the Wing body moment?
07-05-2017 01:03:54
Khwaja Haroon
Welcome Barry: The diagram shows various factors that contribute to pitching moments. As along as the moments are balanced the aircraft will be in equilibrium. When there is an imbalance then ofcourse the pitch changes accordingly e.g. increasing the thrust vector will create an imbalance and if you look at the diagram you'll figure out that the aircraft will pitch up. Wing contributes to moments about the CG of the aircraft, essentially through moment about aerodynamic center and lift acting through moment arm. The fuselage i.e. aircraft body at an angle of attack to an airstream experiences moments too about its aerodynamic center, along with some lift and drag around it. So when the wing is attached to the body its a wing-body combination. The airflow around this combination, beacuse of airflow interference, is different as compared to airflow around wing and body separately. Due to this interference the moment due to wing-body combination is different as compared to moment due to wing and body separately and is not merely the sum of the two (i.e. wing and body). Same is the case for lift and drag around it. So wing-body is one among other factors contributing to total pitching moments.

What Exactly are you struggling with
Second find out where you are in relation to or from the VOR. To do that, Centre the CDI ( Course Deviation Indicator with a TO flag indicated. Then decide where you want to be. Select the Desired RADIAL (Look at the Bottom). Look at where the needle is deflected to. Now Pick a heading to intercept the radial and use the 30 degree rule, or use the heading that is double the difference between the actual radial and the desired radial. Simply fly that heading. If the needle is deflected to the right then fly right and vice versa. As the Radial Approaches, the CDI will move towards the centre of the instrument. At around one dot deflection turn back onto the radial to intercept the radial with the Needle centered
Intercepting is easy. Its divided into a few step obviously first TUNE IDENTIFY and TEST. Usually the tests should be performed on the ground to ensure the correct fuction of the equipment.

I thought I had this down pact but I am having troubles with several questions. mainly wheter to add or subtract the height change based on pressure. For example Given: Aircraft at FL 150 overhead an airport Elevation of airport 720 FT. QNH is 1003 hPa. OAT at FL150 -5? C. What is the true altitude of the aircraft? (Assume 1 hPa = 27 FT) A) 15 840 FT B) 14 160 FT C) 15 280 FT D) 14 720 FT

Hey Alpha, these questions can be quite tricky because sometimes they give QNH or QFE etc. However most of the time the give you QNH and a FL.
....
If they give you a flight level, then usually it is an easier question. Given a FL it means you are given a pressure altitude which is at 1013. Anyway, try not to think about it too much. But the trick i use if given a flight level is to always put 1013 on the right hand side of the equation, and then put the QNH on the left side, if you get a positive number then you add it to FL to get indicated altitude, if you get a negative answer you subtract it. If you alwas follow this rule, you wont have to think too hard.
But remember, it only works if your given a QNH and a FL. If given QFE its a bit different. So in your example it would be..
1003 - 1013 ... <<<< Here I put 1013 on the right and QNH on the left. 1003-1013 is -10. X27 = -270. So your indicated altitude is 15000 - 270.. 14730.. then use this alt and apply the TEC to it.
basically always subtract 1013 from your QNH, if its a positve number add it to flight level, if its a negative subtract it..

Extending flap will reduce Critical A O A ,decrease stall speed,Increase Camber,Co. of lift & drag, I may say pitching up can reduce margin for stall before airplane had stabilised in new configuration, correct me if wrong.

CX2 calculation unknown wind your GS is windspeed and tcrs is wind direction: results in a GS of 193,7kts and a track of 173,6°. hdg to track is drift which gives you 6,4° left drift

easiest is CX2 if you use it
CX2: flight - act leg - unknown wind. enter datas, but your gs is given windspeed, tcrs is given wind direction. results in an wdir which is your required track and wsped which is your required gs
and drift is always from your thdg to your ttrack

07-14-2017 08:43:26

spitzi. out of distance and time you can calc. your GS. with your GS and the other given values CX2 unknown wind, enter datas
cnr you got a tas and a tailwind, which gives you a GS. in your case 180+25=205kts GS
ROC=gradient x GS

Hi, hope someone will illuminate me. It's a simple mass & balance excercise: <For the medium range transport aeroplane, from the loading manual, determine the maximum total volume of fuel which can be loaded into the main wing tanks. (Fuel density value 0.78kg/l)>
From the annex the total of both main wing tanks is: 2998gal or 9084kg
If I convert gal to liters (1gal = 3.785lts) you get the correct answer (11347 aprox)
If I convert kg to liters with the density given in the question you get 11646lts which is listed in the options but it is not correct
I think both ways should be correct but obviously i'm mistaken
And I don't know why

and read the true altitude over calibrated scale
08-30-2017 12:03:00
antiyou
in crp5 u can do this..?
08-30-2017 12:03:00
Zeeshan Asani
if you are flying in a warm air you will be flying higher than indicated , so your true altitude will be higher than the ressure altitude as pressure surfaces bend upwards in a warm airmass

how did you calculate it ?

7000ft

15-14 = 1

deviation = 9
I hope u figure it out. I have to mute the chat, exam tomorrow. good luck with everything

give an example question please, this is too broad..
08-30-2017 02:44:00

okay
A pilot receives a QDR of 135° from the VDF ground station. Where is the aircraft located in relation to the ground station?
08-30-2017 02:45:31
antiyou
So QDR is radial
and you areo n radial 135
so you are east/ south/east
or what are the answers..?
08-30-2017 02:48:20
Youssef Shawki
southeast
but how can I determine that
08-30-2017 03:11:35
antiyou
you draw a vor
and set north up south down east right west left
then you know where 135degrees is. on this line somewhere, your plane is..

A route leg track angle is 250°. Declination is 3° East. Wind is from 190°,, calculations show that it diverts the aeroplane with 4°. Deviation is 2° West What is your compass heading?
Can you help me in this gus

08-31-2017 01:27:22
Sergey
Your compas heading is 241
08-31-2017 10:27:13
ARINDAM BANERJEE
What is the TAS....do you mean Drift is 4deg ...if yes left or right?
250 +4(if left) +2=256(C)...else if 4(right) then 250 -4(if right) +2= 248(C)
Sorry didnot notice the wind direction give. Since wind direction is left of your track hence drift is right, Therefore WCA is left therefore magnetic heading will be 250-4=246...Compass heading "devn west compass best" so 246 +2=248(c) :-Z

the pressure altitude gives an allowance for real pressure at sealevel to be: 1-the same as standard atmospheric pressure 2-to be different than the standard atmospheric pressure 3-to find density altitude
please help i did not understand this question
09-02-2017 05:00:45
ARINDAM BANERJEE
1.Same as standard atmosphere , since Pressure altitude refers to a setting of 1013Hpa or QNE on the altimeter subscale which is the pressure under ISA condns at Sea-Level......the question is an example of how questions are set to test ignorance rather than knowledge of the candidates and shows poor english comprehension of the exam setter rather than the examinee. :-(

And one more, within how many degrees can you do a reversal entry?

An aircraft is flying at FL45 in ISA conditions, with a Radio Altimeter reading of 1860 ft. If the elevation of the terrain beneath the aeroplane is 3090 feet, what is local QNH? a) 1030 hPa b) 996 hPa c) 1042 hPa d) 1013 hPa

hello
09-25-2017 05:16:19
Abdul Rehman Amjad
Altitudet overreads 450feet (see1860+3090=4950feet) which is (450/27) about 17hpa. QNH will be 17 higher than standard so 1013 + 17 = 1030.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing fine. I have a question concerning boundary layer movement on swept wings, with tip stall and CP movement
Could anyone help on that topic?
I understand why there is tip stalling. What I don't quite get is how the pool of stagnant air at the tip grows and why the ram's horn vortex moves inward with increasing AOA. Why does the CP move inward and forward with increasing AOA?

Hi, I have a question. When i climb with constant Power (i.e. 50 % MCP) with an injection system. Do i have to change my mixture setting with increasing altitude ?

Hi just one question, Are these topics updated to the current learning objectives or is some of the old stuff in here irrelevant now?
11-29-2017 02:22:46
Khwaja Haroon
@Gianluca: Hi, The ATPL topics have not been updated after the date they were posted on this forum
@highegt: air density decreases with altitude so mixture has to changed
just a general rule, not talking about a specific question or an aircraft

Hello Adnan
the highest velocity occurs at the point of maximum thickness

When the weight of the aircraft is reduced to half during flight, what is the new airspeed in order to maintain level flight? 0.25,
0.5
0.71 of priginal height
original speed*

@me: In straight and level flight when IAS is doubled, the change in lift coefficient will be 0.25

Hi guys, can somebody explain me why? "at a constant tas the dynamic pressure - willbe greater at sea level than at high altitudes"
or any links to understant
12-12-2017 09:42:46
Admin
because of air density
12-12-2017 09:44:20
Mahmadali Ismatulloi
so what is the difference between "constant tas" and "constant TAS through an inversion"
or they are the same?
12-12-2017 09:45:27
Admin
Dynamic Pressure = 1/2 x density x Square of Speed
more density at sea level
in inversion the temperature increases with height
high temperature means lower density
that means low dynamic pressure
unless TAS is increased to compemsate

thanks you very much, but everything what you said i knew them, i dont know why im still doing stupid mistakes in aviation exam

Good day Everybody! can somebody explain why? - During a flight when the trailing edge flaps are lowered to the fully extended position ---> the wing CP moves aft( i got this part) , but How L/D ratio decreases?
12-17-2017 11:13:14
Khwaja Haroon
Hi, Apart from increasing lift, flaps also increase drag. The increase in drag is more so ratio decreases e.g. 20/10 = 2.00, 23/20 = 1.15, 26/30 = 0.86 Both lift and drag are increasing but drag is increasing more so ratio value is decreasing.

what happens to thrust when I double flight speed while simultaneously double the rotational rate of a propeller
12-19-2017 05:37:33
Khwaja Haroon
Propeller thrust depends on the blade angle of attack. At low airspeeds the angle of attacK will be large and thrust will more and vice versa. Coarsening the blade angle (on a variable pitch propeller) at higher speeds can help offsetting this effect to some extent. On a fixed pitch propeller the angle of attack can be increased by increasing power and reducing TAS. I don't know about the exact ratios in reference to your question as that might involve propeller efficiency mathematics. Following links might give you some clue: http://www.epi-eng.com/propeller_technology/selecting_a_propeller.htm or http://aerotrash.over-blog.com/2015/02/2-blade-vs-3-blade-and-4-blade-propellers.html

Hi All, I searched some websites but I couldn’t find anything about my questions, I would appreciate if someone can help with the following questions, 1) I read that starting from UK CAA and at some of the EASA countries the ATPL questions have changed but what about Bulgaria did the question also changed or BQ are just fine ? 2) Which QB would you suggest for ATPL exams in Bulgaria BGS or Aviation exam ?
